The medieval city the Aigues Mortes ones with 20mn: The town of Aigues Mortes was built at the 13th century on the initiative of Saint Louis, in order to equip the kingdom with France of a port open on the Mediterranean. Entirely girded ramparts (13th-14th S.), it gives to our time on the paludous extent of the Camargue
The communal territory is composed of part of the wet plain and ponds of Petite Camargue. It is separated from the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean) by the commune of the Grau-du-Roi. Aigues-Mortes is however connected to the sea through Grau-du-Roi.
Thus the communes of Saint-Laurent d'Aigouze and the Grau-du-Roi are bordering with the commune of Aigues Mortes. Its inhabitants are called the Aigues-Mortais and Aigues-Mortaises.
